Gerald Banks, age 71 of Centerville died Friday evening, April 30, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center, Centerville.

He was born August 6, 1938 in Centerville. He was the son of Harold and Gladys(Daniels)Banks. Gerald Graduated from Centerville High School in 1956. On December 5, 1958 he married Sally Clark of Mystic at the Methodist Church in Mystic and they had 51 years together. He farmed and bought market hogs at the south sale barn until he started his law enforcement career in 1965. Gerald was Chief of Police in the early 1970's and elected Sheriff of Appanoose County in 1984, where he retired on the last day of December 2000, as the longest serving Sheriff in Appanoose County history. Gerald was a member of the Episcopal Church, Lifetime member of Iowa State Sheriff's and Deputies Assoc, and the National Sheriff's Accoc. and a past member of the Elks, Rotary and Chamber of Commerce.

Gerald is survived by his wife Sally, daughter Teddy(Jim)Walker of Mystic, Iowa; three sons John(Marcia)Banks of Corydon, Iowa, Joe(Lori)Banks of O'Fallon, Illinois, and Charles(Stephanie)Banks of Centerville; Eleven grandchildren; Josh(Stacy)Walker, Jennie(Robbie)Morgan, John Daniel Banks, Brent Banks, Brennan Banks, Taylor(Josh)Stadler, Nicole Banks, Jacob Banks, Chelsey Banks, Peyton Banks and Katarina Banks. And five grest grandchildren; Alexis Hudson, Justin Walker, Jackson Walker, Kathryn Morgan and Grace Ann Walker. Sisters Dorothy Wolver of Centerville, Mary(Bob)Schaffner of Seymour and Janet(Tom)Demry of Centerville. Two brothers John(Marlene)Banks of Seymour and Ronnie(Nancy)Banks of Seymour. Many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by parents Harold and Gladys(Daniels)Banks, His biological Parents Ray and Nellie(Eddy)Banks, brother James and his wife Mary and his brother in-in-law Edwin Wolver.

Funeral services will be held 11 am Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at Faith United Methodist Church with Pastor Kay Singley officiating. Friends may call all day Monday at the Lange Funeral Home with the family present from 5-8 pm. Burial will be in the Sharon Chapel Cemetery. A memorial has been established to Sharon Chapel Cemetery Assoc. or the Appanoose County Special Deputies.
