She was named after her Aunt Olive, but always called Mae. She was the only member of the Class of 1927 of Orcas Island High School where she was part of the girls' basketball team. She worked as a secretary for a lumber company in Bellingham and then moved to Spokane where she met her future husband Alvin Johnson. They lived in Opportunity (now a neighborhood of the City of Spokane Valley) where Alvin owned an appliance and furniture store. They raised one child, a daughter.
