EX Major Leaguer Hoag Dies
High Springs-Former baseball player Myril O. Hoag, who spent 15 years in the major leagues and played with the World Campion New York Yankees in three World Series, died Wednesday at his home in High Springs following a lengthy illness. He was 62.
Hoag played with the Yankees during their heyday of the Bronx Bombers. He joined the team in 1931, and except for an injury which kept him from the 1933 season, played with them until 1933. His best year with the Yankees was 1932, when he hit .370. He batted above .300 in 1936 and 1937. He was a member of Yankee teams which won the World Series in 1936, 1937, 1938. Also on those Yankee teams were Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
Hoag was traded to the St. Louis Browns of the American League after the 1938 season and batted .295 in his first. He played with the Browns three seasons and was traded to the White Sox in 1941. He spent his last two years in baseball with the Cleveland Indians before retiring in 1945.
Hoag complied a lifetime batting average of .271.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of High Springs, the American League and a Veteran of WW II.
His survivors include a widow, Mrs. Olivia Hoag, High Springs, a son Merlin Hoag, Sacramento, California; and a brother, Gilbert Hoag, Sacramento, California.
Hoag moved to High Springs after his professional baseball career and became manager and a player with the Gainesville G-Men, a local baseball team in the late 1940's according to Red Dulaney who was also a player on that team.
According to Dulaney Hoag was the leading pitcher and hitter in the Florida State League 1947-48-49. Dulaney said, "the community has lost a great Hero".
He was called a "fine fellow" by former Lincoln High School coach T. B. McPherson. McPherson, who said he knew Hoag only as a manager of the G-Men, said Hoag was a rather fair-minded man. "He played every person, according to ability rather than skin color".
