John H. Denny, 105, of 160 Winthrop Road died Tuesday at Community-General Hospital. A native of Eaton, Mr. Denny resided most of his life in the Syracuse area. He was a carpenter and constructed barns in the Hamilton and Earlville areas before moving to Eastwood. Mr. Denny started John Denny Homes, which built houses in the Eastwood area. He retired from house building at the age of 75 but continued with a remodeling business until the age of 90. Mr. Denny was a member of the James Street United Methodist Church and the Eastwood Senior Citizens. He also was the oldest member of Joygerms and participated in local Joygerm parades. "He was one of the most charming and unique individuals I have known," Joygerm founder Joan White said Tuesday. "My life has been enriched by knowing him. He was an absolute dream, a Joygerm supreme." His wife, the former Martha Hudson, died in 1970 and a daughter, Christina L. Bigby, died in 1976. Surviving are a grandson, Donald K. Bigsby of Schenectady, and several nieces and nephews including Hattie R. Hughes, with whom he resided. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral Home, the Rev. Warren Covall and the Rev. Hani Khory officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 3111 James St. Contributions may be made to the James Street United Methodist Church.
