Joseph was the son of Joshua Jenkins and Cerrene Elder. He married Della Craig 31 October 1892 at Marion County, Iowa. Della was the daughter of Thompson and Judith Painter Craig of Indiana Township, Marion County, Iowa. Joseph and Della were the parents of 2 children, a son Forest born 1895 and a daughter Ruth born 1904. Joseph had been a Knoxville, Iowa farmer and Superintendent of the Englewood Sunday School before his death residing on what was formerly the McCoy Nursery Farm 1 mile west and north of the Spring Hill Schoolhouse in what is known as the Englewood neighborhood.

In June 1905 Joseph went to Longmont, Colorado for his health. In September 1905 he removed to Greeley, Colorado and was joined by his wife and 2 children as his health was not improving. He died of TB in Greeley, Colorado at 5PM Friday 26 January 1906 age 37y 7m 11d. His body was brought back to the home of his brother William Jenkins in Knoxville, Iowa on Monday 29 January 1906. A service was held at 11:30 AM Tuesday 30 January 1906 at the Englewood Chapel by Rev. F. E. Day and burial was at Concord Cemetery in Knoxville.

Joseph is survived by his wife and two children. Also his father Joshua Jenkins, brothers Thomas, Stephen, William, Jarrett and Charles Jenkins and sister Ann (Mrs J B Clark). All reside in Knoxville except Thomas whose home is near Madison, Missouri.
