John was the only child of Charles and Ruie Blake. He was born in Long Beach, at the old Seaside Hospital (which became St. Mary's and finally Long Beach Memorial). His family was living on Orange Avenue in Long Beach by then after having lived at 923 Willow Street when they had first came to Long Beach, but they moved before oil was discovered there. He was called "Jack" by his family. Jack served in the US Navy between 1942 and 1945, mostly in the South Pacific with the Marines as a corpsman.
He married Margaret Carey in June of 1942 at St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Long Beach. They had seven children between 1943 and 1956. In 1966, after the death of his father, Jack took Margaret and his four younger children and went to Europe, buying a VW Bus in Germany and touring for a year. When they returned they settled in the mountain cabin he and his father had built in the early 1940's. Jack and Margaret had gotten a taste for travel and in the late 60's and early 70's they went to China, the Soviet Union, Bermuda and Hawaii to name only a few places. At Christmas in 1980 Jack took sick with a severe flu and was unable to recover.
