Ezra was the sixth of ten children born to John Byers and Elizabeth Myerly. On September 16, 1870 he married Olivia Bankert. Together they had six children: Clara Roberta, Franklin Lammas, Noah Albert, Nancy Lovenia, William Ezra Smithson and George Edward. Olivia died in 1882 and Ezra took a second wife. On June 2, 1885 he married Mary Maglene Yingling and together they had six children: Denton Elmer, Bernard Wilson, Walter Raymond, Nettie Mae, Erven James and a baby. Mary died in 1919 leaving Ezra alone until his death in 1936.
