John Nicholas Lauer (oldest child of John and Margaret Machinot Lauer). When he was twenty-three years old he married (1) Barbara Stager in 1883. Barbara was born in 1862 in Peoria, Illinois. They had two little girls, Margaret (Marrie) born on April 14, 1884 and Cathryne (Katie) born Jan. 10, 1886. Their mother Barbara passed away Nov. 1, 1887 of typhoid malaria.
Grandparents John and Margaret Lauer took these two little girls in and raised them.
In 1892 Nick married (2) Alice A. Williams, who was born in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio in April of 1876. Five daughters were born; Alice on July 23, 1893, Mary on March 16, 1895, Rose on Dec. 22, 1896, Edith in 1898 (died as an infant) and Grace born on Sept. 23, 1900. They divorced in 1903.
Nick still trying to work as a carpenter with 4 little girls, some of them went to live with Grandma Lauer and some went to live with their Grandma Williams.
Nick continued to do carpenter work and on June 27, 1906 he married (3) Anna Elizabeth Bostock. She was born in Shelton, England in 1880. Their first child was Edgar Nicholas, born June 30, 1909. He was the only son born to Nick Lauer out of the 10 children he had.
On July 21, 1911 Edna Josephine was born, and on May 30, 1913, Ivy Stella was born.
His wife Annie died from blood poisoning at the age of 36. She had been kicked by a horse.
How sad it must have been for Nick to once again not have a wife with three small children. He tried hiring help so he could keep his family together. He moved to Madrid, Nebraska and while in Nebraska, he lost Edna on March 17, 1922 of tubercular meningitis at the age of 10. His only son Edgar joined the Army.
Nick moved to Colorado. His last wife was (4) Isabelle Pence of Sheridan, Wyoming. (Isabelle Lauer passed away in 1940).
Nick Lauer passed away when he was 65 years old in 1926. He died in Denver, Colorado but is buried in Sheridan.
"Nick" the small man who always wore a mustache and smoked a pipe, had many wife's but did not drink or swear.
