She served on the Presbyterian Board of World Missions, and on the Board of Directors of Columbia Theological Seminary in Atlanta.
Mary Ellen was the author of "Rosalie and Radishes, A History of Long Beach, Mississippi". She organized a committee that led to the organization of the Long Beach Historical Society and served as it's first president.
