Marie was born in Utica on July 25, 1913, the daughter of Clinton and Catherine (Donavan) Hanrahan. She was raised and educated locally, graduating from Utica Free Academy. In 1938, Marie married Charles W. Callahan, in Utica. Mr. Callahan passed away in 1970. She was employed as an Office Manager for Dr. Hatfield and Dr. Locke. Marie was a member of St. Peter's Church in North Utica and a member of the Altar Rosary Society. For many years, she was a volunteer with Hospice of Oneida County. Her favorite pastime was playing Bridge with her friends at the North Utica Senior Center.
Marie is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Maureen C. and Robert Saunders, Marshfield, MA, Ellen M. and Robert Culver, Frankfort, NY; a son and daughter-in-law, C. William and Susan Callahan, Venice, FL; twelve grandchildren, Kelly (& Jack) Bono, Frankfort, Deborah (& Andrew) Lipman, CT, Tara (& Charles) Durse, Frankfort, Casey (& Beth) Callahan, NH, Shane Callahan, CO, Andrew (& Beth) Callahan, CO, Carrie Callahan, MA, Sheila (& Paul) LaPierre, CT, Mark (& Shanna) Saunders, NH, Michael (& Dana) Saunders, FL, Meghan (& Jake) DeGroot, MT, Katie (& Brian) O'Mara, MA; and fourteen cherished great grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Marjorie Sornborger, Utica; and one sister-in-law, Helen Hanrahan, Whitesboro. Marie is predeceased by a brother, Lawrence Hanrahan, and two sisters, Mildred Carlton and Eileen Callahan.
Mrs. Callahan's funeral will be held Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 10:00 am at St. Peter's Church in North Utica where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment in St. Peter's Cemetery will take place at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Road, North Utica on Saturday morning from 8 – 9:30 am. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may donate to Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 4277 Middle Settlement Rd., New Hartford, NY 13413 in Marie's memory.
