The Kunkel family established St. Luke's Lutheran church, and the 4 brothers, Henry, Leopold, Julius and Adolph, were actively interested in the development of Olney. The large families of the Kunkels and the Wilhelms were united many times, the second generation providing five marriages between the two.

Julius Albert Kunkel, 96, one of the Olney area's oldest residents. He was born born in 1854 in Gensen, Germany and came to Texas with his parents in 1872. They settled in Brenham, Washington County, Texas. About 8 years later he moved to Young County. He had been in ill health for two years.

Julius Kunkel married Bertha Junker on 21 December 1880 in Brenham, Texas. The young couple moved to South Archer County in 1881, where he engaged in farming.

Kunkel was a charter member of St. Luke's Lutheran church. After his wife's death, he lived with his children.

Survived by: six sons: Julius M., Marcus J., Walter J., Enrich A., Karl P. and Alfred A.; and four daughters: Mrs. Morts Phillips, Mrs. Ed Dietrich, Mrs. W.G. Schlegel, Mrs. Fred Huebner; 26 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Julius O. Martin, Leo Kunkel, Oscar Kunkel, Milton Kunkel and Melvin Kunkel.
