The last man standing, the last of the warriors, John W. ''Jack'' Conley passed away on May 5, 2010 after a short illness.

Born May 31, 1924, John was a second generation Irish American, the 4th son of Patrick A. and Grace M. Conley.

He was preceded in death by his son, John Kevin; his mother and father; his brothers, Edward, James, Charles, and Patrick.

He is survived by the mother of his children and long time friend, Joan Conley; daughters, Johanna Conley (Doc) Higgins, Joanie and Kathleen Conley; sons, Shawn (Nancy) Conley, and Brian (Debbie) Conley; grandchildren, Rachel, Shawn, Jackie, and Jessica Conley, and Jamie (David) Bever; great-grandchildren, Josiah, Madison, Broderick, and Bradon; many nieces, nephews, and friends; and his two ''four legged'' friends, Noei and Paddy.

John was a career Police Officer with the Akron Police Department from Oct. 30, 1950 until retirement, June 23, 1982. He served as a Reserve Officer until 2002.

A World War II Army Veteran, he attained the rank of Master Sergeant and was awarded the Bronze Star, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and Sharpshooter. He was an honor guard for the war dead. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

A pilot, he also rode horses, and motorcycles. John never backed down from a fight in his life. He will be greatly missed by his family and all those who truly knew him and loved him.

'God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. He put his arms around you and whispered, ''come with me.'' With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.''
