Abby Farwell's mother Abigail Taylor died shortly after giving birth to Abby. Abby married William Henry Ferry (1845-1900) who graduated from Yale in 1868 and was president of the San Diego Flume Company.

Abby and William had five children: William Henry (1876), John Farwell (1877), Francis (1878), Montague (1881) and Horace Farwell Ferry (1884).
