"STATE'S OLDEST BREWER DEAD.
August Gerlach, 82, died Friday at the home of his sons C. F. Gerlach, Waukesha, distributor for the Blatz brewery there. Mr. Gerlach was said to be the oldest brewer in Wisconsin.
Born in Mequon April 10, 1843, he lived there the greater part of his life. Marrying the daughter of the owner of the Zimmermann [sic] Brewery of Mequon, he took charge of it in 1874 and it remained in his control until 1902, at which time he retired in favor of his son, Frank. He lived in Milwaukee until the death of his wife in 1913. Since then he has made his home with his children.
Surviving him are his three sons, Charles, Frank and Adolph, all connected with the brewing business, and two daughters, Mrs. Minnie Sachse, North Milwaukee, and Mrs. Adeline Selle, Cedarburg.
The body was at the funeral rooms of Schmidt & Bartelt until Tuesday, when it was removed to Herziger's hall at Mequon. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon."
