Simon was the 1st of 14 children born to Darius and Anzoletta Sutherland. He married Ida J. Shockley on January 23, 1878. They had four children: Nellie, Benjamin, George Eugene and Ira Earl (who died Nov. 1928 while working as a brakeman on the railroad in the Wishkah Valley, WA). Wife Ida died and Simon kept his family together marrying Mollie Reed of Delta, CO. They farmed in Vernal, Utah. Mollie died and he lived with his daughter in Oregon; then married Diery Ellen Patterson September 5, 1928 in Oregon. The couple later moved to Clifton and finally to Grand Junction, CO.
