FATHER: Eusebius Emerson, Sr.
WIFE: Julia Ann Wass
m. 1844
CHILDREN:
1. Millard Fillmore Emerson
2. Ralph Waldo Emerson
Little is known about Enoch Avery Emerson, yet what is known shows him as a man of character and a natural leader. Before leaving Maine for California, he was a sea captain. In 1882, the Free Mason Forbestown Lodge #50 lists Enoch as an active Master Mason and his son, Ralph, a junior warden.
Enoch was nineth out of twelve children. He married into the Wass family, as did his brother, Aaron. He and Julia Ann Wass married in 1844 and had at least two children: Millard Fillmore (1848) and Ralph Waldo (1852).
Naming their sons after a successful relative and a contemporary vice-president/president shows Enoch and Julia were interested in politics and current events. Enoch was a registered voter. They had been married 53 years when Julia was left a widow.
NOTE: In the research of Washington County, Maine, done by Leonard and Tibbetts, Enoch's middle name is listed as Auburn. Other than that research, it is not found. In three of the voter lists for Yuba County, California, Enoch's middle name is listed as Avery.
