Brigadier-General Joseph P. O'Neil. Commander of the 179th Infantry Brigade, 90th Division, World War I. Years earlier, in 1890, as a lieutenant, Gen. O'Neil had led a US Army expedition to explore Mount Olympus and was among the first to reach its summit. His report urged that the mountain be made a national park, a recommendation that became reality with the administration of Theodore Roosevelt.
