Amelia Helen Isaacs was born in Williamson county, Illinois on the 19th day of November, 1868. She was a daughter of Harvey and Amelia (sic.) Isaacs and one of a family of several children. The parents and the brothers and sisters are all deceased with the exception of one half brother and four half sisters. She married Andrew Jackson Lewis in Franklin county, Illinois on the 31st day of October, 1889. Seven Children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Lewis, one of whom, a daughter, Rose Elizabeth died in infancy, and the other survive her and are: Newton Lewis of Valier, Illinois; Earl Lewis of Roseburg, Oregon; Mrs. Edna Gulley of Sesser; Mrs. Orbin Dubois and Mrs. Pearl Cutler of Valier and Mrs. Nancy Hague of Kennet, Missouri. A step-son, Burley Lewis, of Roseburg, Oregon whom she reared from infancy, also survives her. Her husband died in Valier on June 4th 1923. They have lived their entire married life in Franklin county, moving to Valier in 1911 where they have since made their home. While living in Benton, many years ago, Mrs. Lewis made the "Good Confession" and united with the First Baptist church of Benton where her membership remained throughout the rest of her life. She was devoted to her church and so long as her health permitted she was active in the church work, helping the membership of that faith in Valier in every loyal way she could although she never moved her membership to the church in Valier. She was widely and favorably known in the community in which she lived. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, and a faithful and devoted friend and neighbor. She has lived her life well and she will be long remembered for her wise counsel and her faithful service to her friends and her family. She had been in frail health for the past fourteen years. She had given of her strength freely and she gradually failed through the years and for the past ten years or more she had been an invalid. Her mind was clear and active to the end. She was keenly interested in those about her and to the well-being of her own in particular. She bore her suffering with patients and fortitude and was never heard to complain. Some two weeks ago she became much worse and she finally sank into that dreamless sleep that knows no waking this side of Eternity, leaving the immediate family named, 22 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends who mourn her passing. She died at her home in Valier at 3:45 P.M. January 18, 1941 at the age of 72 years, 1 month and 29 days. Her life and the loss of her loved ones and friends have suffered have been best described, perhaps, by the closing verses of a poem written by that greatly loved poet of the home and fireside, Edgar A. Guest, where he says: "For all her love was mine to know And rich was I indeed. To her, I knew that I could go In every hour of need. Now comes the word that she is dead, The friend I love is gone. And I recall the way she said: I'll see you later on: I'll see you later: oft said she. Oh, brave and steadfast friend, We'll meet again across the sea At my poor journey's end.
