Funeral services be held today for retired Rear Adm. William Henry Raymond, 54, who was credited with playing an important role in the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Adm. Raymond, of 46 Sicilian Walk, died Friday of a heart attack in his Los Angeles office. He was with the Defense Systems of the Univac Division of Sperry Ram Corp.

Born in Maryland, he was graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1932. During World War II, he served as a commander in the Pacific and was awarded the Legion of Merit. While in command of the USS Stickell he was commended for actions during the blockade in the Yangtse River-Shanghai area. As commanding officer of the Naval Reserve, 9th District, with headquarters in Chicago, Adm. Raymond handled technical aspects of the completion and opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Surviving are his wife, Rene; two daughters, Margaret Emily (Marily) and Julia Anne, and a sister, Mrs. Douglas Amann.

Arrangements are being handled by Glasser & Miller Mortuary of Arcadia. Service today will be at 1 p.m followed by a military funeral and interment in Resurrection Cemetery, South San Gabriel. The family suggests donation to the National Heart Fund.
