WELL KNOWN FARMER IS CLAIMED BY DEATH

John J. Clinton Died Friday Night After Being Rushed to Hospital For Emergency Operation.

John J. Clinton, aged 60, one of Hartford's best known farmers residing just east of the village on M-17, died at Tabor hospital in Benton Harbor last Friday night where he had been rushed earlier in the evening for an emergency operation for acute bowel trouble. His death ensued before the operation could be performed.

Mr. Clinton had been ill but a few hours, and news of his death came as a distinct shock to his Hartford neighbors and friends, among whom he had been held in the highest esteem for more than forty years.

Funeral services for him were attended at the Methodist church Monday afternoon, Rev. H. L. Potter of Allegan, a former pastor here, and Rev. W. H. Irwin conducting the service. The funeral was largely attended, and a great profusion of floral tributes attested the high place he held in the community. Interment was at Maple Hill.

Mr. Clinton was born at Ypsilanti, Mich., on February 26, 1855, the son of John and Harriet Clinton. On November 24, 1880, he was united in marriage with Ida Dick of Niles, and to this union one daughter was born, Mrs. Ethel Clinton Anderson of this village.

Besides the wife he is survived by the daughter, one brother, David Cameron of Hartford, two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Woods of this village and Mrs. Price of Benton Harbor, and a granddaughter, Miss Dorothy Anderson of this village.

Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Clinton lived for a short time in South Bend, Ind., and later in Benton Harbor, but for about forty years they had been residents of Hartford, coming here in the early 80's. Few men have ever been more highly regarded for their sterling integrity and honor and for the kindnesses of their nature than had Mr. Clinton during his long residence in Hartford, and these qualities of his character were eulogized at the funeral services Monday.

Mr. Clinton's farm east of the village was a frequent subject of comment as one of the best kept farms in the township, and every domestic animal on the place was a pet—two facts that attest his industry and kindness of heart. As a neighbor he was ever helpful and sympathetic, while in business and community life he was actuated by those ideals that make for the finest type of citizenship.

While retiring, modest, and never seeking prominence in community life, he has nevertheless left his impress upon the community an upon the friends and neighbors who esteemed him for his sterling worth.
