Axel Fant, 84, Dies in Cedar Rapids; Native of Sweden

Axel Fant, 84, a resident of the community for 65 years, died Friday at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, where he has been a patient for a few days. Since the death of his wife in 1955, he had been at the Maple Lawn Rest Home near Marion. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Jones Funeral Home, with Rev. D. Merle Hill, pastor of St. Paul's Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Pilot Grove cemetery. Music for the service was provided by Mrs. D. Merle Hill, Mrs. Brad Furman and Miss Maxine Lortz. Pallbearers were Wayne Imhoff, Myron Heitman, Larry Wandling, Harlan Heitman, Harold Hopp and Robert Fant. Son of Karl and Maria Fant, he was born in Kisa, Sweden, April 13, 1877. At the age of 13 he came to this country with his older sister Mary and located in Davenport. A short time later he came to Williamsburg where he found work on farms nearby. He was confirmed in the Lutheran church in Sweden before coming to this country. When he moved to the Pilot Grove community, he joined the Methodist church there and remained a member the rest of his life. He made visits to his homeland twice after coming to this country. On Sept. 19, 1900, he was united in marriage with Minnie Klever of the Pilot Grove vicinity. They lived on a farm east of Williamsburg for nine years, after which they went to the Pilot Grove community where they resided for 42 years. In 1953, they moved to Williamsburg where they lived together until her death on Jan. 30, 1955. A short time later he went to the Maple Lawn Rest Home near Marion, where he remained until he was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids on Monday of last week, for a few days, until his death on Friday, May 12. Nine children were born to them: Carl of Williamsburg; Annie, Mrs. Clark Heitman of Williamsburg; Carrie, Mrs. Clarence Wandling of Marengo; Adolph of Blairstown; John of Williamsburg; Ruth, Mrs. Elmer Imhoff of Center Point; Elvena, Mrs. Otto Hopp of Conroy; Dorothy, Mrs. Merrit Plagmann of Norway, and Mary, who was deceased in 1922, at the age of 17. Besides his wife and daughter, he was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Dorothy Wandling and six brothers and sisters, who died in Sweden. He is survived by his eight living children; a sister, Alvina Youngberg of Davenport; three brothers, Victor of Remer, Minn, Tiris of North English and Adolph of Davenport; 24 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
