Mary Catherine Berry, daughter of Peter Stephen Berry and Tobitha/Tabitha Alvira Piatt, born August 23, 1854 near Filmore in Iowa Township, Iowa County, Iowa. The Berry Family remained in the Filmore area until they migrated to Morris County, Kansas around 1870, settling near Council Grove in Elm Creek Township.

Mary Catherine married John R. Houser, son of Peter Houser and Sarah Ann Coulter, March 16, 1872 or 1873 (year of marriage in conflict and still being researched) at Council Grove where they resided until moving onto Teller County, Colorado, settling in Lawrence in the late 1880's.

In the 1900 Census, Mary reported 7 of 9 children living including: Anna M, Jennie L, Olive L, Frederick, Roy or Ray, Gertrude, and Halmond H.
