Mrs. Rosa Hays was born April 27, 1849 and died June 29, 1932 at the age of 83 years, 1 month and 28 days. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Newkirk and was the last of her family. She was united in marriage to Benjamin Hays December 1, 1870, and to that union thirteen children were born. Her husband preceded her in death some 29 years ago. Two older children, Minnie Lee and Dave, also preceded her in death.
She united with the Tipton Christian church in 1896 and since that time placed her membership in the Fortuna church, living a beautiful Christian life, thus causing all who knew her to love her. "Aunt" Rose, as she was lovingly called, numbered her friends by the hundreds.
Mrs. Hays lived on a farm near Fortuna until several years ago when she, with her granddaughter, Ethel, whom she had cared for since infancy, moved to Fortuna. Ethel, with Aunt Rose's children near, lovingly cared for her in her failing years.
She leaves to mourn her death the following children: Frank, Joe and Ed, of Berkeley, Calif;, Charlie and Til, of Versailles; Tom and Ercell, of Fortuna; Mrs. Walter Cook, of Tipton; Mrs. Harve Lehman, Mrs. W. T. Lehman and Mrs. R. Dornan. She also leaves 33 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church Friday morning at 11:00 o'clock, with Rev. Posey of New Franklin officiating. Interment was in Newkirk cemetery. The pallbearers were six of her grandchildren: D. C. Cook, Gilbert Hays, Sherrill Hays, Emmett Dornan, Ralph Dornan and Jewell Lehman.
