Graveside interment services will be held for Archie Edgar Sarten, a resident of the Vista Grande Nursing Home for the past four years, on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at the Mitchell Cemetery near Bellview, N.M., beginning at 10 a.m.
Mr. Sarten passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home on Wed., Dec. 29, 1999, at the age of 91. He was born in Hereford, Texas, on Feb. 29, 1908, to James Allen Sarten and Nannie (Downs) Sarten.
Archie grew up near Belview, N.M. on a farm. As an adult, he had businesses in Fresno, Calif. Returning to farm life, Archie ranched in Moab, Utah and in Missouri. He ran motels in Moore, Okla. and Lubbock, Texas, finally retiring to a ranch in El Frida, Ariz. Four years ago Archie moved into the Vista Grande Nursing Home to be nearer his sons.
An adventurous man, Archie raced in the Pan American Road Race that ran from Guatemala to the United States in 1953. He also held a pilot's license.
Preceding Archie in death was his first wife, Josephine Fury. Archie also married Virginia Ramirez of Mexico City, and raised a second family.
Archie leaves behind his children and their spouses, Jim and Elda Sarten, of Moab, Utah, Wanda and Larry Ratliff, of Yakima, Wash., Rod and Tonja Sarten, of Cortez, and Nan and Rodney Davis, of Moore, Okla.; 13 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Agnes Moss, and her husband, Frank, of Norman, Okla., Jewell Caudle, of
Sulphur Springs, Texas, and Ernestine Steinback, of Muleshoe, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Mamie Sarten, of Phoenix, Ariz.
Services will be conducted by the Ertel Funeral Home, Cortez, Colo.
