Capt. Lowell L. Mittelstadt, 27, of S. Mitchell ave.,Elmhurst, an air force navigator-bombardier was killed in the crash of a B-47 jet bomber at the royal air force Upper Heyford base in England, air force officials in London announced yesterday.
Three other members of the crew escaped serious injury Tuesday when the plane, inbound from an air force bese in New Hampshire, veered off a runway, hit a building, and burned, they said. It was part of the 509th bomber wing at Pease, New Hampshire, and was a replacement for the American nuclear bomber force at Upper Heyford, an air force spokesman said. It carried no bomb load.
