George Washington McPheeters is the third child born to Azariah and Susannah (Mathis-Matthews) McPheeters. He was born 21 Oct 1846 Greencastle, Putnam Co., Indiana, on his father's farm. A decision was made by several members of the McPheeters family in Putnam, Indiana, to move to Dallas Co., Missouri, in the Ozarks of southwestern Missouri. "George W." was a young child when his family arrived by ox-cart and wagon to the present town of Louisburg, Missouri. "George W." grew to manhood on his father's wilderness farm, that was close to his Uncle Johnny and gg Grandpa Andrew. He learned the trade of carpentry from his father. Carpentry became a lifetime skill. He was in the Union Civil War, Osage Co., with his older brother and father. After his discharge from the Union Civil War he married his sweetheart, Luvena Brown on 28 Feb 1866 in Polk Co., Missouri.
