Andrew Magnus Nelson was born in Blackstad Parish, Kalmar Län, Sweden on May 12, 1850. His parents were Nils Magnus Petersson and wife Anna Katrina Nilsdotter.
At the age of 20 on June 6, 1870, Andrew left Hultåkra, Hässleby Parish, Jönköping Län for America; he arrived in New York on July 1, 1870. Two of Andrew's brothers also migrated to America: John Alfred (Memorial#52312540)had preceded Andrew to America by two years and Nils Peter (Memorial #52312571)left seven years after Andrew in 1887. The third brother, Karl born March 3, 1855 remained in Sweden. John Alfred Nelson and Nils Peter (N P) Nelson both settled in Lake Providence and are buried in the Lake Providence Cemetery.

Andrew settled in East Carroll Parish where he was employed by Judge William Glasber Wyly as overseer of the Wyly-Bass Plantation for 17 years. He married Hilda Sophia Nelson (same last name, no blood relation) in August 1882 at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis. After leaving Wyly-Bass, the family moved to Wishwell Plantation for two years, and next to Longwood where they resided for 20 years. In 1912 the family moved to their home on Davis Street in Lake Providence where Andrew lived until his death in 1937 at the age of 87.

Andrew was on the first East Carroll Parish Police Jury. He served as president of the Police Jury and of the Parish School Board.

Andrew and Hilda had nine children, all born in East Carroll Parish:
