John Smith Tuttle was the son of Darlin Marion Tuttle and Elizabeth Smith. He came to Indiana in 1836 with his wife Hannah Hale and eight of their children. They settled in Delaware County, Monroe Township and had six more children.

Rev. Tuttle was a minister in the Protestant Methodist church. Upon arrival in Delaware County he purchased 174 acres of land, mostly forest. He built a log cabin on the property. Over the years he cleared all but 40 acres of the land. He was also a hunter, bringing home deer, wild turkeys, wolves, bears, and wild cats.
