According to his WWI and WWII draft registration cards, Detective Peter Merylo was born April 4, 1895 in "Austria", possibly present-day Czech Republic or Slovakia. He enlisted during WWI at Columbus Barracks, but apparently did not serve long enough to see overseas service. The US Adjutant General Military Records contain the following entry:

He was the lead detective on the Cleveland Torso Murders case for a while, and pursued leads even after he was no longer a detective on the police force.
