He served in that duty until September 3, 1864, when he was promoted to Chief Surgeon of the 50th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He then served through the end of the war, and resigned his commission on June 30, 1865.
He was an 1857 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Medical School. In 1870 he was appointed as supervising surgeon of the Marine Hospital service on the Pacific Coast.
