Youngest son of Civil War Soldier Pvt Cannon Harris and Melinda Jane HUCKABEE.

His father, Cannon, was a widower with several children (Sarah Elizabeth, Ransom Bird, William T/F, and James Berry Harris) when he and Melinda Jane Huckabee married in 1962 in Jackson Co, AR (now Woodruff Co) and lived in the Taylor's Bay/White River area. (Melinda's first marriage was to a Rushing about 1854 in Tennessee, and she had two children as well, Thomas (1855 TN) and Franklin (1857 AR) when she and Cannon Harris married.

PVT Cannon Harris left to fight for the Confederacy with Co D, 32nd AR Div and was wounded and captured at Helena, AR on July 4, 1863, a month before Melinda delivered their son, William Cannon Harris. He was sent up the Mississippi River to the Prison Hospital at Alton, IL where he died Jan 24, 1864, having never seen his youngest child. He is buried in the Confederate section of the National Cemetery at Alton.

Cannon's older children married in Arkansas and about 1880 Ransom and James moved off to Hill Co. Texas. Melinda also remarried about 1870, her 3rd husband was Oliver Butler Goodrich and lived in Izard County, AR.

Melinda and Cann ended up in Archer / Young County, Texas. Her step-daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Harris, had married Virgil Augustus Spradlin in Woodruff Co., AR and they had 5 sons - Charles James David, William Virgil, Edward Anderson, Harry and Robert Lee. Sarah and her husband both died in AR (buried at old Bay Cemetery) when the youngest son was quite young. The older 4 Spradlin brothers decided to move to Hill County, TX where "Uncle Jim" (James Berry Harris) said he had work for them. They soon discovered things were better further NW in Texas and all relocated to the Megargel / Archer City area where they lived out their lives.

Uncle Cann married Savannah Bivens and they had Charles, Ruth, Ruby and Beerah. Melinda is said to have died at Jean in Young County, Texas. Cann and most of his descendants are buried at Archer City and Wichita Falls.

The above information was gathered in the 1980s and 1990s from elderly Spradlin/Fichte relatives still living in Archer and Young Co.
