He came to Stockton in the early 1850's as a harness maker and opened his business on Hunter Square Plaza.

Among other activities, he was an early fire chief. He invented the device for quickly snapping the collars into place on the fire horses.

When an alarm came in, this speeded the getaway of the fire engines.
