Basic at Ft. Dix and assigned to a Port Battalion unloading Liberty ships of supplies for the war effort from Africa to Italy in the course of the next 36 months. After VE (Victory in Europe 8 May 1945) Day he was getting ready to board ship (thinking they were to be sent to the Pacific to help in winding up that fracas) when VJ (Victory in Japan September 2, 1945) Day was announced soon after they had put to sea and it was with great joy that the ship headed for home. (per wife)

Dad told us that he and his crew stayed on Anzio (Jan - Jun 1944) while ammo ships came and went, carrying ammo and weapons back and forth from Sicily...he and his crew boarded and unloaded the ships but slept in foxholes between shiploads...the Army thought they were safer on Anzio than riding back and forth on the ships transporting the ammo...
