Basic Training: Fort Hood, Texas
AIT Training: Surgical Technician, serving with the 665 Medical Clearing Company. He was a medical technician on a ship.
As the ship was coming in to dock in Okinawa, one of the U.S. ships mistook them for an enemy ship and fired on them. Vance was wounded by shrapnel which lodged near his spine. This happened on May 3, 1945. He was given an honorable discharge in Nov. 1945 and awarded a purple heart.
Special Duties Assigned: He was a conscientious objector and refused to carry a gun. His ranking officer made him carry a bag of sand on a dessert march that his company took in California.
Civilian Occupation: Minister.
