Thumper was a rabbit who was originally named Bugs by students at my high school. He was kept in the courtyard at our school for one school year and was observed by the various science classes and taken care of by the students. At the end of the year, he was raffled off.

On the last day of school my name was announced as the winner over the PA system at the end of the day. I had bought at least 20 tickets! Well, I had not told my parents I had purchased the tickets and I usually rode the school bus home. What a surprise when I called my mom at work and asked her to come to the school to pick me up and to bring a box!

My step-father built Thumper a great hutch and I became the proud owner of a rabbit. Little did I know how much work was involved in taking care of a caged rabbit, every day, all year long, in all kinds of weather.

Thumper taught me a valuable life lesson and I have never again owned a caged animal.

Oh, he got out of the hutch on plenty of occasions to play. But, when I let him run loose in the basement, he kept finding electrical cords and wanted to chew on them!

So, we made a play area outside for him. His name was changed from Bugs to Thumper because as soon as he was let out of his cage, he would thump his back feet on the ground over and over.

One night something ripped through the double wire on his cage and destroyed him. My step-father buried him in our backyard and planted daffodils on the spot in his memory.
