Grace was widowed in 1938, and lived a meager life, making do with very little. All of her 88 years were spent in Cass County, and the only property she ever owned was her burial plot at the Beardstown City Cemetery. Before "perpetual care" was available for cemetery maintenance, she would walk to the cemetery so she could trim the grass/weeds on her husband's grave with scissors or a push mower. She died from complications following a hip fracture after a fall at a nursing home.
