John and Dollie became the parents of John H. Jr., Birdie, and Iva Lee Nichols. They built a home at Meadow Branch in Graham County in 1926. John worked for ALCOA as a meter reader for 12 years, never missing a shift in all that time. He farmed after he retired, as well as spent time hunting and fishing. When he was 60 years old, he bought a new 1930 Chevrolet, paid $495 cash for it, and learned how to drive!
John and Dollie were known for their hospitality. Many total strangers came to their door and were given meals and a place to stay. They took care of Dollie's mother in their home for the last three years of her life. She was bedfast during the last two years.
John and Dollie lived clean lives and never spoke unkindly of others, according to their granddaughter Elizabeth Blake who lived with them several years. Elizabeth provided most of the information in this memorial in the book THE HERITAGE OF GRAHAM COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA.
