Joel Gillett was the son of Abner Gillett 1741 and Hannah Culver 1743. Abner had moved from Windsor, Connecticut to Amenia, Dutchess county by 1761. Abner fought in the Revolutionary War as an Ensign, First Company, Dutchess County. [NOTE: not documented yet in the DAR]

Joel married Phoebe apparently in Dutchess County. Many of Abner's children moved to Otsego County. Joel moved to Canaan Columbia county by 1800, and then to Mendon, Monroe County by 1825.

He may have returned to Columbia County for a while; it appears he is in the 1830 census there. However, he finally settled in Mendon, where he lived the rest of his life.

After Phoebe died in 1830, Joel married Mary about 1832.

Children, all by first wife:

Anna 1782, married to Mr. Angevine in Dutchess County,

Abner C 1789, moved to Otsego County (as many cousins had), married Electa Mills, then moved to Junius, Seneca County and lived their the rest of his life,

Leonard 1798, married Percia in Columbia County, moved to Clarendon, Orleans County by 1850, then moved to Sweden, Monroe County by 1860 and lived there the rest of his life,

Hannah 1802, married Marin Beebe Lovejoy, moved from Columbia County, to Victor, Ontario County.

Nelson 1815, moved to Clarkson, Monroe County, New York, then to Waukesha County, Wisconsin.
