Willis Benton Pearson, 60 year old retired lieutenant in the Panama Canal Zone fire department and a one time Decatur fireman died in Decatur & Macon county hospital at 4:25 am yesterday.
A veteran of World War I, Mr. Pearson had returned to Decatur a little less than a years ago,after retiring from the Canal Zone fire department in Nov.1948. He lived at 571 N.Water street.
He was born in Decatur and was a member of the Decatur fire department from July,1911 until July 1916. He then moved to the Canal Zone where he was a fireman until returning to Decatur to enlist in the army in 1918.
Following World War I service with the coast artillery as a sergeant, Mr. Pearson rejoined the Decatur department from December 1918 until February 1920. After that he returned to Panama.
The son of James W.and Ellen Pearson he was born on Nov.27,1886. He was a member of the Methodist church and was a 32 degree Mason.
He leaves only a sister-in-law,Mrs.Fannie Pearson of Decatur and several cousins.
The body is in Brintlingers funeral home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 pm today.Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.
