YORKTOWN - Robert Ernest Abbott Sr., age 80, of Yorktown, died on Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999. He was born in Frankfort, N.Y ., on Aug. 14, 1918, and was the son of the late Ernest Charles and Ruberta Chase Abbott. He was the loving husband of Jane Newman Abbott. Mr. Abbott was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy as an engineering officer (lieutenant), and saw action during World War II in the South Pacific at Guadalcanal, the Philippines, New Caledonia and other islands. He was a retired engineer with the Federal Railroad Administration and various private railroad industry companies after 41 years of service. He had several patents for railroad devices used in the industry today. Mr. Abbott was a member of Kirkwood Presbyterian Church.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Jr. and Peggy Connolly Abbott of Austin, Texas; a son, Philip Chase Abbott of West Lafayette, Ind.; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane J.A. and W. Reynolds Monach of Yorktown; seven grandchildren, Jennifer A., and her husband, Kenneth Floyd, of Dallas, Christopher Abbott of Austin, Texas, Laurel and Sally Abbott of West Lafayette, Ind., and Bruce, Keith and Grace Allyce Monach of Yorktown; and a brother and sister-in-law, Philip and Pat Newman of Gurnee, Ill.

Two brothers, John C. and James A. Abbott, preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, Feb. 3, with Dr. Michael Condrey officiating. The family will receive friends after the memorial service in the fellowship hall of the church. The family asks that memorial donations be made to one's favorite charity. Burial will be at a later date in Quantico National Cemetery, with military honors accorded. Claytor Rollins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
