Little is known about John Simpson's parents. One census record said that his father was born in Scotland, and his mother in Canada. Others said both came from Ontario, Canada.

When John was 16 years old, he moved from New York to California. A few years later he moved to Oregon and married Jane Coulson. They had a farm in the Lorane Valley in Lane County. They raised eight children: Isaac Lincoln, George A., Benjamin F., Amarilla S., Charles E., John E., Etta Jane, and Anna C. Jane died in 1883, when their youngest child was only four. John then married Anna, about whom we know little. In 1900 John retired from farming, and he and Anna moved to Washougal, Washington, where he died. He was buried next to his first wife, Jane, in Oregon.

John was a life member of the Oregon State Agricultural Society and a National Grange organizer. When he died, he had 21 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His obituary was published in The Oregonian, Jan. 8, 1914.
