It was not until he lived in England that he began to learn who Herzl was and what his message was, and he became a Zionist. He graduated from officer training school and became an officer of the British Royal Artillery. He was assigned to duty in India and Ceylon. He rose to the rank of Captain of the Royal Artillery. He also lost contact with his parents and family, as had many other Jews. He feared the worst yet he remained hopeful that somehow their fate would not be as terrible as others. He hoped they would survive the war somehow. Upon discharge he had the opportunity to visit, for a few breathtaking days, Israel (then British Mandatory Palestine). He was deeply affected to the very core of his being. In 1946 he was appointed to serve as commercial representative to the British embassy in Washington, D.C. When he learned about the fate of his parents he committed suicide by jumping off the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge on 26 November 1946. He was buried in US, but was later buried in Israel.
