James T. Adkins, Once Roodhouse Resident, Dies
ROODHOUSE - James T. Adkins, 82 year old former Roodhouse community resident died Sunday night at the Main Street Nursing Home in Alton where he had been cared for the past ten months. Mr. Adkins, who formerly lived east of Roodhouse, moved to Alton eight years ago. He was born in Greene county Dec. 7, 1876, the son of William and Orlena McVey Adkins. He was twice married, first to Isabel Hopper, who died in 1907 and later to Christina Spencer who died in 1951.
One son, James V. Adkins of Alton, survives as do two stepdaughters, Helen Hopper, Wood River and Louise Berthlett, Alton. There are four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. One son, Jesse Adkins, preceded his father in death in 1937.
The body was taken to the Mackey funeral hame where services will be held at 1:30 p.m Wednesday. Rev. Ollie Phillips will officiate and burial will be made in Richwood cemetery, east of Roodhouse.

Adkins, West Ninth street, previous to entering Main Street Nursing Home. a year ago, died Sunday at 8:45 p.m. at the nursing home. He was one of four generations residing in the James V. Adkins home at time of his residence there. Mr. Adkins was born in Greene County, Dec. 7, 1876, a son of the late William and Orlena Ann McVey Adkins. Nearly all of his life was spent in Greene County where he worked as a coal miner prior to his retirement. Surviving in addition to his son are four grandchildren, James H. Adkins and Betty Barnd, Alton; Mary Lou Holland, Louisiana, Mo., and Thomas A. Adkins, who is in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany, and three great-grandchidren, Glenda and Lloyd Barnd, Alton, and Patty Ann Dutton, Louisiana, Mo. His wife and a son, preceded him in death. The body is at Mackey Funeral Home, Roodhouse, pending funeral arrangements.
