Bert Dancey Dies at 69

Flora

Bert Dancey, Flora City Council member and former football coach at Flora High School, died 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Clay County Hospital of an apparent heart attack. He was 69.

Dancey came to the Flora High School as head football coach in September, 1927, following his graduation from the University of Illinois.

During his 31-year career as coach at Flora, he produced 10 North Egypt Conference championship teams and three undefeated teams.

Dancey stepped out as football coach in February, 1958, but remained at Flora High as physical education teacher and athletic director.

He was installed as president of the Illinois High School Coaches Association in 1959 and received the William McAndrew Memorial Award, Southern Illinois University's highest athletic honor in 1960.

Dancey retired as teacher and athletic director in 1966. Flora's Dancey Field was names in his honor.

In April, 1971, he was elected to the Flora City Council, a post he held at the time of his death.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Flora Elks Club.

Funeral services for Mr. Dancey will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the Frank

Funeral Home, Flora, where friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery, Flora.

Surviving is his wife, Eleanor; daughter, Mrs. Nancy Jean Fulk of Cahokia; son, Edward of Arlington, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Two brothers preceded him in death.
