SALISBURY - Carroll Wayne Whitman, 69, of Salisbury, loving husband, father, grandfather and brother died unexpectedly Tuesday, June 12, 2007, at home.

Born Dec. 4, 1937, in Salisbury, Mr. Whitman was a son of the late John Shelton and Marie McDaniel Whitman. He was a graduate of Boyden High School, Class of 1956, and was a graduate of Gardner-Webb. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and active in the Everyman's Bible Class. He retired as Captain of the Salisbury Police Department with 30 years of dedicated service.

He was a student and collector of history. He served on the Board of Director's of the Rowan Museum; organized and established the Rowan History Club, and was chairman of the Historic Preservation Commission for the City of Salisbury. He enjoyed his involvement with the Salisbury Kiwanis Club, Salisbury Confederate Prison Association, the John W. Ellis Camp of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans and the development of the History and Art Trail for Salisbury. He also volunteered as a trolley guide of historic Salisbury for the Rowan County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Family includes his loving wife of 16 years, Nancy Hoyt Whitman; daughters, Elaine Wilderson and husband Eric, of Towson, Md., Ellen Sidbury and husband Tom of Annandale, N.J., and Jennifer Whitman of Salisbury; sons, Chip Alexander and wife Amanda of Sneads Ferry, Will Alexander of Holly Ridge, and Mac Alexander and wife Jessica of Hampstead; brother, Charles and wife Pat of Boone and sister Linda Kucinski and husband Joe of Salisbury and grandchildren Sean and Ben Sidbury, McKenzie and Madison Alexander.

Service: A Memorial/Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Jim Duncan officiating. Law enforcement officers and members of the Kiwanis Club are invited to sit together during the memorial service.

Visitation: Will follow the Memorial Service in Lewis Hall at the church.

Memorials: May be made to The Rowan Museum, 202 N. Main St., Salisbury, NC 28144; or the donor's choice.
