Richard H. Bell passed away in a Sonora hospital following surgery for a ruptured appendix. He was stricken more than 48 hours before his death and received treatment quickly, but the poison had already spread through his system.

Richard, his wife, Gladys, and their children, Barbara and Russell, moved to Columbia two years prior to his death. The family purchased the Wilson Store and made it a prosperous business.

Richard was related to the Grant family whose members still reside in Columbia.

Richard was a member of the American Legion.

Richard H Bell was born in California as was his mother. His father was born in England. He was raised in San Francisco by his uncles and aunts of the Zinders family. The Zinders family was well educated and had originally come from Germany, arriving in 1884.

At the age of 19, Richard lived with his uncle, Waldamar Zinders, in Columbia on a farm they both worked. His granfather, Otto Zinders, lived nearby.

Richard married Gladys Forsyth when he was 27 and she was 21. The couple lived in San Francisco where Richard was a contractor for a builder before moving to Columbia. Their daughter, Barbara, was born in 1929, and their son, Russell, was born in 1931.

After Richard's death, Gladys remarried. A daughter, Beverly Bean, was born to this union in 1939. At the time of her death in Los Angeles County, January 18, 1988, at age 82, Gladys' name was Gladys May Pratt.

Richard and Gladys' son, Russell (Rusty) Bell, passed away in Sonora at the age of eleven after running into the side of a moving car and receiving a skull fracture.

Rusty Bell passed away in Sonora at 1:00 a.m., Saturday, April 18, 1942, about eight hours after running through a vacant parking lot and running into the side of a moving car at the corner of Stewart and Church Streets in Sonora. He was on his way to visit a friend in Columbia when the accident occurred. The driver of the vehicle was exonerated of all blame.

Rusty was a popular sixth grade student at Sonora Grammar School.

Rusty was born in San Francisco to Gladys Forsyth Bell and Richard Bell, Sr. Rusty's father passed away in 1936. Rusty was survived by his mother, step-father Bert Bean, sister Barbara Bell and half sister Beverly Bean.

Funeral services were held at the Burden Chapel Monday afternoon by Father James Gilmartin, of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sonora. Interment was in the Public Cemetery, Columbia.
