According to census records he was born in December 1837 in Maryland and his wife was born in July 1836 in Virginia, perhaps in the area that became West Virgina because the 1870 census has them living in West Virginia. In 1880 they were living in Washington, Stark County, Ohio and by 1900 they were living in Clarion County. Pa.

His wife is listed as Mary M. in the census, but he had a daughter Mary E.
