ETTA M. ALCORN

NOVEMBER 19, 1912 - APRIL 27.1992

Etta Margaret Johnstone Alcorn was born on November 12, 1912, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Her parents, George Sanford Johnstone and Christina McAlpine, were born in Glasgow, Scotland. Both were Salvation Army officers. Etta, being raised in the Army, entered the Officers Training School at an early age before marrying.

Etta had one brother, George Walrath Johnstone. Lt. Colonel George Johnstone was the Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army in Southern California at the time of his Promotion to Glory in 1954. Lt. Colonel Johnstone and his wife, Lois, had four sons. The Johnstone Family is still actively involved at The Salvation Army Pasadena Tabernacle. Etta was the wife of Harlen James Alcorn, Sr., who pre-deceased her by 20 years and is the mother of three sons, Harold, Sanford, and Harlen, Jr. Etta also has eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

All three sons completed their college undergraduate educations and went on to complete their graduate degrees. Hal is Vice President, Systems Engineering and Development with Farmers Insurance. Hal and his wife, Janet, a registered nurse, reside in Altadena. Dr. Harlen Alcorn is a graduate of Fuller Seminary and is a practicing psychologist. Harlen and his wife, Rebecca, reside in El Cajon in San Diego.

Etta has worked for The Army for over 34 years, first in San Jose and then, since 1962, here in Los Angeles at Divisional Headquarters. Etta's most recent assignment was as the Administrative Assistant to the Divisional Secretary.

For many years, Etta attended The First Methodist Church of Glendale. She sang in the choir and was active in church affairs. Two years ago, Etta returned to Pasadena Tabernacle where she was reinstated as a uniformed soldier. She will be greatly missed by Pasadena Tabernacle Corps, her many friends, associates and family.
