Mary Felton's priority was her family, and she would defend them in a ‘mother bear' manner. Twice a week she faithfully baked bread, and every Sunday there was a big family dinner. Grown children, spouses, and grand-children in the area would attend. The living room of the home was small, but there was a very large central room in the house. It contained a huge dining table (seating for 15-16), and eating, talking, card-playing, etc. were all done in this room. Mary loved to laugh, and she did so loudly. At times she would even rock back and forth and slap her thighs when amused. She always wore black shoes with heels, a dress, and apron. The chamber pot was called ‘the Maggie', and soakies (bread, coffee, milk, and sugar) were a breakfast staple. She and Harry worked hard and raised a good family.
Grandma was the typical Grandma, pleasingly plump and always wearing an apron. The smell of fresh made bread greeted you every time you walked in the door. She let us have coffee and warm bread with strawberry jam. I can still taste that. Soakies( homemade bread in a bowl with coffee poured over it and lots of sugar) was a dish made often.
