Sidney James Allen, age 88, of Marble, NC passed away on Thursday, May 20, 2010, after a long illness.

He was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County; he was the son of Ira and Stacy Davis Allen. He was a long-standing member of McClelland Cove Baptist Church in Andrews, NC. Sidney served in World War II in the US Navy, and worked many years at Berkshire Knitting Mills before becoming a self-employed businessman.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sons, Gary Lee Allen and Paul Rex Allen; sisters, Amalee Allen, Roena Allen, Maude Allen Davis, Emma Allen Mintz and Birdie Allen White and brothers, Kenneth Allen and Garland Allen.

Mr. Allen leaves behind his wife of 71 years, Vina Marie Allen; daughter, Linda Allen Tatham of Knoxville; four sons, Jackie James Allen, Sr. and his wife, Marilyn of Atlanta, GA, Robert Junior Allen of Marble, NC, Billy Ray Allen and his wife, Vickie of Hayesville, NC and Larry Bruce Allen and wife, Angela of Murphy, NC and one brother and sister-in-law Claude and Janice Allen of Stanley, NC.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, May 23, 2010 at Townson-Rose Chapel in Andrews, NC. Rev. France Postell and Rev. Jimmy McClure will officiate. Burial will be in the Valleytown Cemetery in Andrews, NC. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Jay Allen, Jeff Allen, Barry Allen, Jamie Allen, Duane Allen, Travis Allen, Nathan Allen and Chris Tatham . Honorary pallbearers will be Marvin Guffey, Bill Mintz, Burke West and granddaughters, great-granddaughters, great-grandsons and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM to 1:45 PM, Sunday, May 23, 2010 at Townson-Rose Chapel in Andrews, NC.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be in memory of Sidney James Allen to the American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park, Bld. 1, Asheville, NC 28801.
